Keyed Merchant Accounts
Keyed merchant accounts are commonly referred to as MOTO (Mail Order / Telephone Order) merchant
accounts, and are used for organizations that do not conduct face-to-face business with their
customers. Companies or businesses that sell products over the telephone or via the mail must
utilize MOTO keyed merchant accounts. This allows the customer’s credit card number and
transaction amount to be keyed into the merchant’s credit card payment processing terminal or, in
some cases, a computer software program.
MOTO keyed merchant accounts enable keying credit card payment processing over the
internet
MOTO keyed merchant accounts carry a higher security risk than retail merchant account services
because the credit card and customer are not physically present for transaction processing. Since
it is harder to verify that the customer is truly the cardholder and/or that the card is not
stolen, the risk for fraudulent purchases is greater. Credit Card Trans, with its first-class
MOTO credit card payment processing services, strives to provide the most secured transaction
processing for Keyed Merchant Accounts.
There are some precautions that may be taken to tighten security and lower the risk of fraud for
keyed merchant accounts. An AVS (Address Verification System) or CVV (Card Verification System)
is commonly used for keyed merchant accounts. An AVS will verify the zip code of the credit
card’s billing address, often even verifying street address and telephone number. A CVV verifies
the set of numbers imprinted on the credit card and even encoded in the card’s magnetic strip. A
CVV is usually used in conjunction with an AVS to help lower and/or eliminate fraudulent orders.
With the proper precautions, a keyed merchant account can work effectively for Mail and Telephone
Order (MOTO) businesses. Our services at Credit Card Transactions Inc. are waiting to assist you.
